The laws of physics limit the smallest objects we can see in a microscope, because of the wavelengths of visible light. When taking my introductory histology class in 1976, the sense was that light microscopes had pretty well reached their zenith decades before. How curious that the 2014 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to three researchers who ignored the supposed physical limitations producing the Nanoscope.

As in the 19th century, the microscope is again a darling of the Life Sciences.

David Nolte, PhD is one of Purdue University’s most prolific inventors. David’s specialty is optical physics. He too, was unimpressed by those who thought the microscope was a tool of the past. David’s work in Biodynamic Imaging has resulted in a new class of scientific instruments which allows the observation of activity within living cells.  

David is one of a very few faculty, anywhere, to launch his own company, AniDyn, to commercialize his research. Typical of everything David does, AniDyn is meeting with great  excitement, winning  Purdue’s 2013 Burton D. Morgan Entrepreneurship Competition, a 4 year NIH Ovarian Cancer research grant, and a  $150,000, 2014 National Institutes of Health SBIR grant. You will be reading lots about AniDyn in the future!

So why should you care about Biodynamic Imaging? This technology is a big deal because it greatly expands the promise of personalized medicine allowing therapy selections based on objective information. 

Imagine, knowing before the first dose of chemotherapy that the patient’s tumor will respond to that specific medication while their healthy cells are being spared. The doctor biopsies a tumor, exposes actual tumor cells to  different therapeutic agents and combinations, without ever placing the patient at risk. Using Biodynamic Imaging, the doctor can determine the most effective treatment for that specific patient.

David’s technologies also hold great promise in accelerating new drug discoveries and in reproductive medicine.
