Fireside Chat with: Ashley Schaefer, Head of Cell Development Ten-Nine Technologies

Energy drives the world and is poised for massive changes with an increased reliance upon electricity. One of the fundamental limitations of electricity is the cost and difficulty in storing it. The future of energy is tightly intertwined with the ability to store energy.

Many people are unaware that this region hosts one of the world’s most capable energy storage R&D labs, the BIC ( Battery Innovation Center). The BIC is located a stones throw from the West Gate of the Crane NSA and the Naval Surface Warfare Center which itself is one of the most advanced energy storage research centers.

The BIC has provided an array of services from laboratory validation and safety testing to small scale manufacturing for nearly 200 client companies. While many of those engagements can’t be disclosed one of the most interest has been with a Tulsa based startup, Ten-Nine Technologies. The BIC was able to validate a Ten-Nine chemistry was the first to ever achieve fossil fuel energy density parity. In simple terms, their chemistry was able to store as much energy per pound as gasoline and more than twenty five times the density of common Lithium chemistries.

About our Guest:

Ashley Schaefer obtained her Bachelors Degree in Mathematics and Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before completing her Masters Degree Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech. Ashley studied and worked abroad in Australia before returning to begin her work at the Battery Innovation Center rising to Director of Programs.

Ashley led the team at the Battery Innovation Center (BIC) that tested Ten-Nine’s revolutionary high energy-density materials. In her seven years at the BIC, she had her hands on everything from cell fabrication to business development.

In our fireside chat we’ll explore the future of energy with someone in the front row of that arena.

About Ten-Nine Technologies

Founded in 2014 “Ten-Nine started in a back room of our angel investor’s warehouse. Tables from the hardware store served as lab benches. There wasn’t a sink, so glassware got washed in the bathroom at the end of the day, and I took the small flasks of nanoparticles to my mom’s house and baked them in her oven.” – Paige Johnson, founder.

Fast forward and Ten-Nine now has made over 54 patent filings, had 8 patents granted and has a 24 tons per annum pilot plant on line. Ten-Nine has been a NASA iTech Challenge finalist and named a Top 10 Nano Material Solutions Providers 2021 from Manufacturing Technology Insights.
