Known as “America’s Seed Fund,” the SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) and STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) programs provide competitive access to R&D funds to stimulate technological innovation by small businesses in the U.S. The program can help startups and existing small businesses, interested in or performing research, by providing access to nondilutive grants funds to support proof of concept in Phase I and prototype development in Phase II. If successfully proven, with full development support in Phase II, successful technologies could move into the commercial market.
This event will introduce you to Stephanie Fertig, HHS Small Business Program Lead. She currently oversees the Health and Human Services (HHS) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, which include the NIH SBIR & STTR programs. Many companies leverage NIH funding to attract the partners and investors needed to take an innovation to market. They focus on a variety of high-impact technologies ranging from research tools, diagnostics, digital health, drugs, medical devices, and others. Since 2014, Indiana’s SBIR/STTR matching program has provided more than $8.3M to 114 companies in 18 Indiana Counties. Collectively, these companies have attracted more than $56M in SBIR/STTR grants and over $21.7M from other capital sources. Speaker: Stephanie Fertig
Stephanie J. Fertig is the HHS Small Business Program Lead in SEED (Small business Education and Entrepreneurial Development) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She currently oversees the Health and Human Services (HHS) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, which are congressionally mandated set-aside programs that provide over $1.2 billion dollars per year to small business concerns. Prior to joining SEED, she managed the SBIR and STTR Programs at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). During her tenure at NIH she led the development and implementation of multiple programs focused on small businesses and translational research. Ms. Fertig has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Virginia and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.
